Motorcycle Rider Seriously Hurt After Collision With Bear on Interstate 78 in Hunterdon County

A late-night crash involving a bear on Interstate 78 left a New Jersey motorcyclist with serious injuries on Sunday, according to authorities.

The incident happened at approximately 11:21 p.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 78 near milepost 22.4 in Clinton Township, Hunterdon County. New Jersey State Police said the crash occurred when a bear entered the roadway as a motorcycle was traveling through the area.

Authorities reported that a 31-year-old man from Phillipsburg was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound when the animal moved onto the highway. The motorcycle struck the bear, causing the rider to lose control and be thrown from the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The rider sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the extent of the rider’s injuries. Information about the bear’s condition was also not immediately available.

The crash drew attention to the dangers that unexpected wildlife encounters can pose for motorists, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility may be reduced. Collisions involving large animals can be especially dangerous for motorcycle riders because they have less protection than occupants of passenger vehicles.

New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. No further information has been released as the investigation remains ongoing.

The case remains an active investigation, and authorities have not announced whether any additional factors contributed to the crash.
