More Americans Question Trump’s Fitness for Office as Health and Age Concerns Rise

Since his second term began, more Americans worry about Donald Trump’s age and health, which may hinder his leadership. New polling data shows that a majority now believes Trump’s age and health are affecting his ability to serve as president, that he may be declining cognitively and physically, and that White House information regarding his status is not entirely forthcoming.

A YouGov survey of U.S. citizens conducted in early September found that over two-thirds feel Trump’s age and health are harming his leadership. Name familiarity and party allegiance still impact opinions, but Independents and some Republicans are more concerned. Before the 2024 election, fewer Americans believed this.

Whether Trump is “too old” to be president is still a partisan issue. Nearly half of Americans, including most Democrats and Independents, feel Trump is too old. Republicans strongly disagree. The same poll finds that nearly half of respondents think Trump is cognitively declining, while a smaller number disagree. His physical decline worries are far more general.

Besides age and health, many Americans distrust Trump’s condition updates. The White House is not transparent enough, with more than half of respondents trusting official disclosures just “a little” or “not at all.” Many voters, especially Democrats and Independents, think information are being hidden.

The study raises questions about Vice President J.D. Vance’s readiness to replace Trump. Only one-third of respondents thought Vance was qualified to be president, highlighting concerns about succession and leadership continuity.

These data show that presidential fitness is a growing political problem in America. While many recognize that age is a natural issue for any leader, these health and age problems have raised questions about whether the president can properly perform his duty. Trump may have electoral hurdles while he stays in office, especially among voters who value openness, stamina, and mental sharpness in national leaders.
