Minnesota Governor Says Federal ICE Operation Turned Deadly Amid Rising Tensions

On Wednesday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz slammed the Trump administration after a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer and civilian were shot and killed during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The event has reignited discussion over federal immigration actions and local public safety.

The shooting occurred in a location south of downtown Minneapolis where federal agents were conducting targeted operations. Governor Walz said state authorities had repeatedly warned that highly publicized and aggressive federal actions may get deadly during a public safety briefing hours later. He called the administration foolish and accused it of preferring fear and spectacle before safety.

Officials said Renee Nicole Good, 37, was involved. Local media named her. ICE agents surrounded her SUV as it partially obstructed a road, according to video. The woman drove away as an agent tried to access the driver’s side door. Another agent drew a gun in front of the vehicle.

The armed cop remained on his feet and fired at least two bullets at the SUV driver, according to the clip. The driver then accelerated and hit two parked cars before stopping. Minneapolis police found the woman dead from a headshot in her car.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the FBI and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate. Due of federal involvement, local police are not heading the investigation.

President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the ICE officer’s self-defense a domestic terrorism event. The president wrote on social media that the driver was disruptive, resisted officers, and physically assaulted the ICE agent, causing the shooting.

Governor Walz called such depiction false and damaging during his briefing. He lamented the deaths, saying the issue should never have escalated. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey openly rejected the self-defense claim, claiming the video footage did not reflect it.

Walz noted that state officials had warned against federal actions to garner attention rather than maintain order. He claimed such acts increase residential community confusion and fear, raising violence risk. The governor said the woman’s death was the result of conflict-driven governance rather than local authority coordination.

The event has raised questions about federal immigration enforcement and state and city cooperation. State leaders are demanding responsibility and a reconsideration of such operations to prevent more deaths as investigations continue.

Federal and state authorities are investigating the situation, and no further details have been provided.
