How Will Trump Be Remembered in History? New National Poll Reveals What Americans Think

A new national study shows partisan division on how former President Donald Trump will be remembered.
The latest YouGov poll from Sunday found that many Americans expect Trump will have a poor historical rating. Most, 40%, thought he would be a “poor” president. In smaller groups, 18% judged his presidency “outstanding,” 16% “above average,” and 9% “average.” His 8% “below average” or uncertain rating.
Bad figures, but political affiliation sharpens the split. Republicans are overwhelmingly pleased about Trump, with 42% calling him “outstanding” and 31% calling his presidency “above average.”
Democratic voters predicted a “poor” historical grade (73%). With 43% choosing “poor,” independents favored Democrats.
The study questioned Americans how their view of Trump evolved in the past year, not merely long-term legacy. Results again reveal nation division.
About 36% said their opinion of Trump “worsened a lot,” while 26% said it “stayed the same.” Only 13% said their opinion “improved a lot,” while the rest said it “improved a little” or “worsened a little.”
The critical swing group, independents, followed the national trend. Thirty-nine percent said their opinion of Trump had “worsened a lot,” while 26% said nothing.
American sentiments on national unity were also surveyed. A startling 53% consider the US “very divided” today. 40% of Republicans, 63% of Democrats, and 54% of independents feel the country is split. Another 25% termed the country “somewhat divided,” while 11% and 4% called it “somewhat united” or “very united.”
Americans view Trump’s leadership differently, according to this 26,645-person research. He was either a revolutionary leader who altered U.S. politics or a controversial figure whose actions will be remembered. Trump still impacts national thought and political identity years after leaving office, and Americans vary on how to remember him.
