Newsom Hits Back After Trump Questions His Fitness, Calls Him a “Brain‑Dead Moron”

Donald Trump publicly questioned California Governor Gavin Newsom’s mental abilities and said he is unfit for the presidency, sparking a new political conflict. While anticipation about the 2028 presidential election grows, the harsh confrontation rapidly garnered national notice.
In an interview with Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens, Newsom discussed his personal struggles, sparking the debate. On a public tour to promote his memoir Young Man in a Hurry, Newsom spoke. The California governor discussed his biography, including his dyslexia, a learning disorder that impacts reading and language processing.
Newsom said in the interview that he wants readers to know that he is a normal person who has struggled like everyone else. He said he previously scored 960 on the SAT and struggles to read speeches. He quipped that politics could be the wrong career for a dyslexic, but he clarified that he still had dyslexia.
Trump supporters criticized the remarks once they went viral. Some critics said Newsom’s statements sounded disrespectful of Black voters, but he said he was just talking about his dyslexia.
Trump then commented on Truth Social. The former president called Newsom’s interview “the most self destructive interview” in his post. Trump claimed that Newsom had admitted to major cognitive issues, which would hurt his prospects of becoming president.
Trump claimed that Newsom had admitted to being dumb, having low academic grades, being unable to read speeches, and having dyslexia, describing him as a “cognitive mess.” Trump said such revelations politically damaged Newsom and made him “no longer a viable presidential candidate.”
The former president made similar arguments in a Hebron, Kentucky, economic speech. Trump told fans that Newsom had admitted to mental illness and suffered from reading difficulties. Trump noted that while such diseases may not be personal failings, the US should not have a president with a “cognitive deficiency.”
Newsom promptly responded to Trump’s comments on X. The California governor said his remarks were about his dyslexia and accused Trump of lying. In a forceful response, Newsom called the former president a “brain-dead moron” and blasted his record in office.
The exchange exacerbated the political competition between the two influential national elites. Newsom also blamed Trump of conduct he vehemently condemned, saying his critique overlooked his dyslexia discussion’s true meaning.
The disagreement is occurring as political observers monitor 2028 presidential hopefuls. Early polls indicates Newsom as a potential Democratic candidate. He has not ruled out a campaign, but he has not publicly confirmed it.
Newsom said in a CNN interview last month that his family would decide whether to run for president. He said the matter has been discussed at home.
Newsom said one of his sons texted him asking if he would run for president. The governor promised his son the family will decide. His son told him not to run because he was young and wanted his father to spend more time with the family.
Newsom told the story to emphasize the human aspects of running for president. He agreed that juggling family with a national campaign is difficult.
Trump and Newsom’s disagreement underscores the increasingly hostile presidential election climate. With several years until the 2028 election cycle, incidents like this show how possible candidates are already under intensive scrutiny and public debate.
