Air Force Veteran Criticizes Pete Hegseth’s Directives Targeting Women in the Military

U.S. Representative and Air Force veteran Chrissy Houlahan has slammed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for sending “chilling” directions to service women. In a recent in-person briefing with hundreds of senior military officers, Hegseth ordered all combat troops to reach the “highest male” physical fitness standards, prompting outrage from lawmakers and military activists.
Houlahan told reporters that Hegseth’s orders convey a message to women in the military that they are unappreciated. She said standards should be fair and uniform for all service members, not gender-biased. Hegseth’s approach could push brilliant women out of the military at a time when the services rely on an all-volunteer, diversified force, according to Houlahan.
The Pennsylvania legislator also pushed military leaders to stay put, despite Hegseth pressing his opponents to go. Houlahan called the meeting needless and unsafe, saying it could have been handled with less disruption. She stressed the need of experienced generals and admirals staying in the military to keep it inclusive and effective.
Hegseth defended his orders, saying that all combat positions must meet height, weight, and fitness requirements twice a year and must maintain grooming standards. He warned that non-compliant service members could impair mission readiness, saying military responsibilities are “life or death.” Hegseth stated that he did not want his son to serve among “out of shape” or unfit combatants.
Houlahan and others warn that this message may alienate service members who don’t suit Hegseth’s military image. She said his attitude favored a restricted demography, which might undermine modern military diversity and skill sets.
As debate over these instructions continues, lawmakers and veterans want clearer policies that ensure equal opportunity and operational standards. Houlahan’s comments show the conflict between military readiness and inclusive service for all qualified people.
