Yankees’ Winning Streak Snapped as Former Teammate Steals Stanton’s Home Run

On Sunday in Chicago, an old buddy ended the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak unexpectedly. A single play shocked spectators and players as the Yankees lost 3-2 to the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
It appeared Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning two-run homer smacked the right field wall. Michael Tauchman made a remarkable catch over the fence, denying Stanton a key hit as Yankees supporters rejoiced. This grab silenced the Yankees’ dugout and ended a good lead.
Manager Aaron Boone said the play transformed the afternoon. He thought the Yankees could have led and dominated. Instead, Tauchman’s leaping robbery showcased his 2019–2021 New York defense.
Tauchman has made many highlight-reel plays in the Bronx, so Yankees skipper Aaron Judge anticipated him to steal Stanton’s home run. Judge said batters know opposing Tauchman in left, center, or right fielder is risky. The Sunday catch confirmed it.
White Sox scored late. A 2-2 deadlock was broken by Lenyn Sosa’s eighth-inning solo home run against Tim Hill. New York lost a close game when reliever Mike Vasil got the last outs in the ninth.
After a great run, Yankees lost. Stanton’s third-inning near-homer showed baseball’s proximity. One foot higher on that ball’s trajectory could have changed the outcome.
NY departed Chicago confident and motivated for the next series despite losing. The players went to Texas in lighter cowboy garb after the game. Despite Sunday’s loss, New York is still a contender with plenty of baseball left.
