Yankees Make Late Deadline Move—Oswald Peraza Heads to Angels in Surprise Deal

Yankees Shake Things Up: Oswald Peraza Traded to Angels Just Before MLB Deadline
The New York Yankees moved infielder Oswald Peraza to the Los Angeles Angels right before the MLB trade deadline on Thursday night. The move shocked fans and league employees.
This last-minute move marks a huge midseason shift for the Yankees as they rebuild and stay competitive. Peraza was a promising potential but failed in the majors. Even though he was very good at defense, he had a hard time hitting this season, hitting only .152 in the few games he played.
In return, the Yankees picked up Wilberson De Pena, a minor league outfielder from the Angels’ system, and some international bonus pool money—a resource that could help the team pursue international talent moving forward.
But that wasn’t all. In a separate and slightly more aggressive move, the Yankees also secured infielder Jose Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays during Thursday’s rain-delayed showdown at Yankee Stadium—a game New York ended up winning 7-4. The trade for Caballero was seen as a clear upgrade from Peraza, especially as the team looks for more immediate impact from its infield depth.
Though visibly emotional after the trade, 24-year-old Peraza remained composed and thankful. Still in his Yankees workout clothes hours after the deal was done, he shared his appreciation for the organization that signed him out of Venezuela back in 2016. “It’s not easy,” he said through an interpreter. “But I’m grateful. Everything happens for a reason.”
The Yankees have also been testing their infield options lately, including recent trade addition Amed Rosario, who has been practicing at shortstop again despite not playing much there in recent years.
As the dust settles on the 2025 MLB trade deadline, this deal marks a clear message from the Yankees: sentiment won’t stand in the way of strategy. Whether it pays off remains to be seen—but one thing is certain, the Bronx Bombers are making moves.
