What’s the Age Difference Between Billy Bob Thornton and His TV Dad, Sam Elliott?

Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott, who play father and son on Paramount+’s “Landman,” are 11 years apart actually. Thornton, 70, portrays Tommy, Elliott, 81, plays T.L. Norris. Hollywood narrative is timeless, as both actors give their roles sincerity and depth despite their small age gaps.

Thornton explored the shocking age gap and father-son dynamics in a recent interview. He noted that actors and roles vary in age. Thornton said actors can play characters older than they are with the right mindset and training. He quipped that he might have played Elliott’s older brother, underscoring that character matters more than age in acting.

Sam Elliott debuted as T.L. Norris in the November 16 “Landman” season 2 premiere. Grieving his wife Dorothy, T.L. enters an assisted living home. After an employee reassures T.L. about seeing his late wife again, he says, “If I do, that means I’m in hell, too.” Despite the emotional plot, Elliott and Thornton did not appear together in the premiere.

Elliott has a two-year contract with “Landman,” so he may return in season three. Elliott claims the group will begin filming season three in April or May, but Paramount+ has not confirmed. Thornton will stay in the program for several years as long as the plot allows or until he is physically able.

Thornton plays M-Tex Oil’s landman and fixer Tommy Norris, who becomes president after season one. Paramount+ airs new “Landman” episodes every Sunday at 3 a.m. ET. Interesting premise, wonderful character development, and great cast make the show stand out.

Elliott and Thornton’s casting follows a TV pattern of character over age. Their camaraderie and dedication prove that excellent acting can bridge even the most unexpected age disparities, making their performances genuine and fascinating.
