Voter Support Slips as Trump’s Approval Ratings Drop in New National Poll

The latest national survey shows President Donald Trump’s support declining just months into his second term. According to a new New York Times/Siena College survey, the voting groupings who helped him win the 2024 election are now turning against him, signifying a return to more conventional US political traditions.

Only 40% of registered voters approve of President Trump’s performance, according to the poll. After returning to the White House, his approval rating was above 50%, but this dropped sharply. The shift signals his re-election coalition is weakening.

Trump gained unexpectedly among young voters, nonwhite communities, and low-turnout groups in 2024. It was widely believed that their victories helped him defeat then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The new data suggests that these voters’ support has eroded and, in some cases, slipped below pre-2020 levels.

Trump has 69 percent disapproval among 18-29-year-olds, while 27 percent approve of his job performance. This is a huge swing from late October 2024, when 43% of this age group said they would vote for him. The 2020 election saw 62% of young voters disapprove, thus mood is much more unfavorable than four years ago.

Similar trends exist among nonwhite voters. Only 27% approve of Trump’s presidency, according to the poll. Nonwhite voters planned to vote for him in October 2024 at 33%. The new numbers imply that his electoral gains among these populations have mostly evaporated.

The New York Times polling analysts say these shifts indicate a further breakdown of Trump’s second-term coalition. The patterns now mimic prior election cycles, with younger and minority voters opposing his leadership more.

The president appeared to react strongly to the poll results. Trump posted many Truth Social criticisms of the survey after its release. Including the survey in a lawsuit he filed against The New York Times shows how seriously his team takes the numbers.

Another recent survey shows similar results. RealClearPolitics averages Trump’s approval rating at 42%. CNN, Economist/YouGov, and CBS News/YouGov polls show more Americans disapproving of his performance than approving, with disapproval percentages near or above 50%.

These surveys indicate that Trump is facing a difficult period in his presidency as support declines across key voting categories. These numbers may influence his political approach and the national debate on his second term.
