Trump, Republicans and Democrats All Draw Harsh Public Judgment in Shutdown Crisis

Americans oppose President Trump, congressional Republicans, and Democrats’ government shutdown handling. A recent CBS News/YouGov study reveals widespread dissatisfaction with how all parties have handled the funding standoff, suggesting political costs are growing for everyone.
After Congress failed to enact a spending measure by September 30, the government shut down October 1. The October 1–3 survey of 2,441 individuals indicated that 32% of Americans favor of Trump’s shutdown reaction, while 28% and 27% support congressional Republicans and Democrats. Trump’s management has strong disapproval: 52% of GOP congressional leaders, 49% of congressional Democrats. The poll’s margin of error is ±2.3 points.
Besides ratings, the poll shows that Americans blame Trump and House Republicans for the closure. They’re blamed by 39% and House Democrats by 30%. Other 31% blame both sides equally. Despite Republican majorities in both chambers, Trump and his party face public opinion.
Only a minority of Americans support the shutdown ideologically. Only 28% support a government shutdown for Democratic and 23% for Republican policy goals. 49 percent were “very concerned” about a shutdown’s economic effects, 31 percent were “somewhat concerned,” and 20 percent were unconcerned.
Trump’s job approval outside the shutdown was also surveyed. It showed 42% of Americans approve of his job performance, down from 44% in September. Trump’s approval ratings on inflation and the economy are in the low 30s and 60s, respectively. His immigration policy is supported by 45% and opposed by 55%.
The study demonstrates considerable anger as the shutdown continues: the president and both parties are failing. American approval ratings are low, blame is divided, and economic anxiety is high, therefore legislative and executive leaders must act quickly to avoid political damage.
