Trump Confirms Death of West Virginia National Guard Member Shot by Afghan National

Former President Trump suddenly reported that one of the two West Virginia National Guard members shot near the White House by an Afghan national had died. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, is fighting for survival after the attack killed Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20. The shooting days before Thanksgiving showed extraordinary and lethal violence against U.S. service members.
Trump contacted troops on Thanksgiving and called Beckstrom a “incredible person, outstanding in every way” and expressed tremendous regret over her passing, noting that her parents were with her in her final moments. He labeled Rahmanullah Lakanwal a “savage monster,” citing his mental illness after serving in Afghanistan.
CIA-backed special squad Lakanwal was 29 when he deployed in Afghanistan. Operation Allies Welcome brought the family to Washington State in 2021. Police say he ambushed them with a.357 S&W. The guard member’s fate may lead prosecutors to prosecute him with assault with intent to murder while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The event reignited debate over U.S. resettlement standards for Afghan war veterans. Trump promised to revisit immigration laws after criticizing the Biden administration for letting Afghans who aided U.S. operations in Afghanistan enter the country. According to official sources, Lakanwal gained refuge under Trump but used Biden-era evacuation protocols.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the attack is being examined as terrorism. Many search warrants have been executed nationwide, demonstrating the case’s severity and nationwide implications. Mayor Muriel Bowser termed the crime a national attack and said the culprit will be prosecuted fully.
National Guard safety and purpose in U.S. communities are also questioned by the shooting. Troop tasks included public safety, neighborhood patrol, and transportation hub surveillance. More National Guard members were sent to Washington to protect civilians after the shooting.
Specialist Beckstrom’s hometown, Webster Springs, West Virginia, mourns her demise. Veterans and towns have conducted prayer vigils in her honor, emphasizing the tragedy’s impact on her family. Officials are closely watching Staff Sergeant Wolfe, who is gravely unwell.
This rare and tragic act of violence underlines the difficulties U.S. authorities face in controlling domestic security and integrating foreign nationals who served with American forces abroad. The political issue over military deployment, immigration, and overseas combat veterans’ mental health is also highlighted.
