Trump Cancels Shutdown Negotiations with Democrats, Raising Shutdown Concerns

Because the government will shut down on September 30, President Trump canceled a meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Trump called Democrats’ demands “serious and ridiculous,” adding the meeting wouldn’t fund the government without shutting it down.
The cancellation has increased concerns of a government shutdown as the date approaches. Democratic leaders wanted Medicaid cash and ACA tax credits. Trump opposed them because he worried they would increase spending and provide unauthorized immigrants with health coverage.
After canceling the meeting, Jeffries and Schumer said Trump avoided negotiations and imposed the shutdown. They focused on rising costs and the Republican health care problem, which they say hurts Americans. Democrats also criticized Trump for favoring transgender rights over government funding.
Due to the delayed conference and White House-Congress deadlock, no budget resolution has been reached. Congress cannot gather for Rosh Hashanah, so leaders must resume talks to keep the government functioning.
A government shutdown might impact the economy, federal workers, and services. The next several days will determine if consensus talks can resume and a deal be reached by September 30.
