Tommy DeVito’s Next Chapter: Giants Release Quarterback, Possible Landings

The New York Giants waived Tommy DeVito this week, leaving his NFL future uncertain. DeVito is now on the waiver wire, where all 31 clubs can claim him before Wednesday. If signed, he will join a team’s 53-man roster. If not, DeVito will become a free agent and can consider joining a practice squad.
Given the crowded quarterback room with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and rookie Jaxson Dart, the Giants’ decision was expected. With limited practice reps, maintaining a fourth quarterback was unlikely. DeVito may return to the Giants, but the organization appears eager to move forward with its existing rotation, making a reunion unlikely.
Now consider where DeVito could realistically land. A young quarterback with starting experience and local ties may be valuable to several NFL teams.
DeVito sticking with the Jets is an intriguing possibility. Tyrod Taylor is scheduled to return from a knee injury and backup Justin Fields, but doubt remains. DeVito might stay in New Jersey and reunite with Taylor, whom he knows from his Giants days, after Adrian Martinez was dismissed.
DeVito has also been linked to the New England Patriots. His last game with the Giants was against the Patriots, and with New England’s roster changes, the franchise may reconsider its interest in him and add him to their young quarterback group.
Las Vegas Raiders are another must-watch. The Raiders are still building their depth chart after trading for Kenny Pickett to support Geno Smith. DeVito would provide security and a proven backup quarterback.
New Orleans’ quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough are rookies. These youngsters have potential, but the organization may wish to combine youth with experience, making DeVito a good backup.
The Indianapolis Colts are another intriguing landing location. With Anthony Richardson still struggling and Daniel Jones joining the mix, the Colts may explore adding a QB backup. If pulled into that locker environment, DeVito’s experience with Jones could help him adjust.
Although Cam Ward is their starter, the Tennessee Titans could use more depth. Behind Ward are Brandon Allen and Trevor Siemian, but DeVito could provide steadiness later in the season thanks to his youth.
Minnesota also seems suitable. The Vikings added veteran Carson Wentz to back up rookie J.J. McCarthy, but Wentz’s durability and McCarthy’s inexperience are worries. DeVito could provide depth as a third quarterback without committing.
DeVito’s NFL career is far from over, whether he’s claimed off waivers or signs as a free agent. DeVito may be a low-risk, high-reward quarterback for teams seeking starting experience and work ethic. DeVito may use this opportunity to establish himself and start a new career.
