Teen Arrested After Altercation Outside Crowded New Jersey High School Basketball Playoff

A 17-year-old was arrested after a fight among teens broke out outside a high school basketball playoff game in New Jersey on Tuesday evening, according to local authorities. While a packed state playoff game was ending, the incident occurred outside Piscataway High School’s gym.

Police said the disturbance started about 7 p.m. Fans packed the gymnasium to see the crucial playoff game for boys basketball, which began at 6 p.m. The venue was full, so a sizable audience waited outside. Officials stated more than 200 individuals were near the gym during the altercation, and several spectators had been turned away due to venue capacity.

Law enforcement said teens fought outside the school. Officers on scene promptly stopped the fight and restored order. One of the confrontational youths fled during the response. Following the altercation, a 17-year-old from East Orange was arrested and charged with assault.

Piscataway Township Schools authorities stressed that no children or staff were involved in the fight. After the incident, a district representative said administrators were aware of the brief commotion outside the school and that local police responded quickly. The statement also noted that students, staff, and supporters behaved well at the playoff game.

Despite the ruckus outside, the basketball game resumed inside the gym. In the North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 semifinals, Piscataway High School played Plainfield. Plainfield won the game 73–57, advancing in the state tournament.

The evening was thrilling for the school and its supporters, with good attendance and enthusiastic fans, officials said. Authorities reported hundreds of fans outside the gym due to the playoff game’s big attendance.

The incident was immediately broken up by law enforcement to protect attendees. After momentarily attracting attention outside the school, administrators stated the matter was contained without disrupting the game or school community.

Authorities have not disclosed the fight’s causes. Officials are still investigating the altercation and happenings outside the campus during the playoff game.
