Search Underway After Woman Jumps from Bridge into Delaware River

Rescuers are scouring the Delaware River after a 25-year-old woman jumped from the Tacony–Palmyra Bridge between New Jersey and Philadelphia. Officials saw a person in the lake after 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Authorities suspect the woman leaped from the bridge’s center.

Coast Guard despatched Philadelphia boat crew and Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter unit. Marines from Palmyra Fire, Philadelphia, New Jersey State, and Burlington County Bridge Commission Police Department led the investigation.

Workers responded all night and Sunday am. At 4 p.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard halted the search pending further developments. The woman left. Officials say new information will revive the operation.

Authorities want to know why she slipped over the railing. She may have jumped into the ocean intentionally, unintentionally, or due to third parties. Strong Delaware River currents, especially beneath the bridge span, hinder the search and endanger divers and surface support workers.
