Rutgers Strengthens Backfield With Experienced Transfer Ahead of New Season

Rutgers football got an experienced running back through the transfer portal, adding depth and competitiveness at a critical position for next season.

Louisiana Tech transfer Thevenin, a physical runner with success, joined the program. With his social media announcement, Thevenin joined Rutgers’ growing roster of offseason transfers. His arrival is vital as the team rebuilds its running back corps after recent departures.

Venin offers Piscataway a unique history. He played junior college before a season at Louisiana Tech and has one year left. Despite legal challenges to eligibility rules for former junior college players, Rutgers expects Thevenin to play this season.

Field numbers reveal Thevenin thrives in contact-heavy situations. He rushed for 634 yards and eight touchdowns last season on 131 attempts. His yardage after contact showed he could break tackles and earn tough yards when plays broke down. He ran 10 yards or more and forced opponents to miss open space.

Thevenin can receive backfield passes as well as run. He gave Rutgers another short-yardage and check-down option with 33 catches on 37 targets for 262 yards. This versatility suits current offenses that feature running backs who can pass and run.

Rutgers’ returning backs Ja’Shon Benjamin, Edd Guerrier, and Terrell Mitchell will compete with Thevenin for playing time. The running game’s standout, junior Antwan Raymond, will also return. Thevenin fills an immediate need and stabilizes the depth chart after two running backs left last season.

Rutgers’ 11th offseason signing shows its ambitious transfer portal roster development. To balance young talent with college experience, the Scarlet Knights have added many veterans.

Rutgers signed Thevenin to improve offensive consistency and longevity. His record suggests he can aid the Scarlet Knights’ ground game, but workouts and competition will determine his role.
