Rutgers Explores Quarterback Options with Visit from Transfer Prospect

Rutgers University recruits quarterbacks as the season approaches. The Scarlet Knights hosted Dylan Lonergan this weekend. Lonergan, who entered the transfer portal, may be a huge addition with two years of eligibility.

The visit comes as Rutgers explores replacing recently-eligible Athan Kaliakmanis. Former four-star prospect Kaliakmanis threw for 5,820 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 25 starts. He became Rutgers’ top quarterback with 57.9% completion.

The quarterback’s likely successor is redshirt sophomore AJ Surace. Surace has played 34 snaps in three games in two seasons. Kaliakmanis has made him a talented and dedicated player despite his minimal experience. Greg Schiano says Surace is a good starter, but competition is welcome.

“I have a lot of confidence in AJ; he is a talented and committed player,” Schiano said. “We constantly assess options. We’ll examine transfer portal stuff. AJ worked hard, but competition will exist.”

Dylan Lonergan’s Rutgers-specific background. The 12th-best quarterback prospect in the nation committed to Alabama in 2023. Only three games for Alabama, he completed 7/8 throws for 35 yards.

Lonergan rejoined Alabama coach Bill O’Brien to Boston College in 2025 for more playing time and a fresh start. Boston College’s Lonergan completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,025 yards and 12 touchdowns with five interceptions. Ran for 73 yards, one touchdown, and four fumbles. His high-ranked recruit profile and Boston College success make him a good Rutgers starter.

AJ Surace and Lonergan may compete at quarterback if he joins the Scarlet Knights. This competition could boost both players’ performance, giving Rutgers fans hope for a good season.

As the transfer portal grows in college football, Rutgers is examining talent to compete. This visit demonstrates the program’s careful hiring and depth-building at key positions.

Supporters will watch Rutgers’ performance over the next two seasons based on the coaching staff’s quarterback decisions.
