Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Faces Tough Challenges Against SEC Teams as Season Progresses

Starting the season, Rick Pitino’s St. John’s basketball team faced difficult SEC competition. The Red Storm started the season by defeating Alabama 103-96 at Madison Square Garden in front of approximately 17,000 people. Three straight SEC losses followed losses to Georgia in the Bahamas and Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament.
SEC teams’ high-scoring, fast-paced style challenges Pitino’s team more than the Big East’s defensive-mindedness. Pitino stated, “The SEC guards are some of the best in the country, and their forwards are taller and more athletic than what we usually see.” He had a good team, but defensive mistakes and poor rotations enabled opponents win crucial games.
After early-season setbacks, St. John’s faces SEC competition. In Atlanta and Madison Square Garden against Ole Miss and Kentucky. Pitino claimed non-conference games help his team for March Madness. Coach emphasizes defense, especially for guards who must stop elite opponents.
Saint John’s frontcourt is strong. After 6-foot-11 Ruben Prey played off the bench and Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins scored 46 points and 14 rebounds against Alabama, the team can compete with the best. After losing, Alabama coach Nate Oats praised the Red Storm’s frontcourt.
The Pitino team wants a Final Four and title. March Madness and SEC teams may influence success, the coach knows. These concerns stem from Pitino’s postseason experience, but early non-conference play shows that defensive discipline and rotations important.
Known for football, SEC basketball teams are talented and have made NCAA Tournaments. John’s can compete at the highest level under Pitino, but March Madness success relies on how it handles fast-paced SEC teams.
