Police Sergeant Charged With Shoplifting Four Times at N.J. Supermarket

A veteran North Plainfield police sergeant is accused of stealing from a Hillsborough store for weeks. People know about the officer’s long law enforcement career and terrible charges.
According to court filings, 50-year-old David R. Canica stole from shops on November 3, 9, 10, and 19. Suspect robbed from Hillsborough’s Route 206 Weis Markets. Several items cost over $200.
Store security identified Canica using rewards card data. Hillsborough police processed him alone after connecting the information to him. He was detained and given a court date.
Canica joined the North Plainfield Police Department in 1998, according to public records. He earns six figures. Arrested, he was suspended without pay during the case. Internal and legal issues have prevented the department from acting.
Many community members are concerned because the officer has worked for the police for approximately 30 years. Store theft by disorderly people may result in fines, restitution, and job loss. Like all defendants, Canica is innocent until proven guilty.
Many North Plainfield and Hillsborough residents are surprised by the charges and waiting for legal action. Govt. comments and court cases should yield more.
