Overnight Blaze Engulfs Vacant Chemical Facility in Paterson, Prompting Massive Emergency Response

A large overnight fire tore through an abandoned chemical factory in Paterson, New Jersey, late Friday, drawing an extensive emergency response from multiple fire departments across Passaic County. The intense blaze, which quickly escalated in severity, kept crews working through the night to bring the situation under control.
According to local fire officials, the fire started around 11 p.m. at a vacant one-story industrial building located on East Main Street. The structure, measuring approximately 200 by 300 feet, was once used as a dye manufacturing plant operated by Galaxie Chemical Corporation. The site has remained unused for years but continues to pose environmental and safety concerns.
Firefighters reported that the situation rapidly intensified, forcing the incident to be upgraded to a multi-alarm fire within a short time. What initially began as a standard emergency quickly escalated to a five-alarm response due to the scale of the flames and operational challenges, including difficulties with water supply in the area. These complications required additional resources and personnel to prevent the fire from spreading further.
Images shared by local fire departments showed massive flames engulfing the building, with firefighters using elevated ladder trucks and cranes to pour water onto the structure from above. The size and intensity of the fire made suppression efforts particularly difficult, as crews worked strategically to contain the blaze and avoid further hazards.
Fire departments from nearby communities were also called in to assist. In one instance, a crew from Wayne had to redirect from another incident in Paterson to support the ongoing firefighting operation. This highlights the scale of the emergency and the level of coordination required among regional emergency services.
The building itself has long been considered a high-risk site. It was previously identified as a Superfund location due to hazardous materials found on the property. In 2018, inspections by federal and state environmental authorities revealed hundreds of chemical drums inside the facility following earlier fire incidents. The presence of such materials has raised ongoing concerns about environmental safety and potential risks to nearby communities.
As of now, officials have not reported any injuries related to the incident, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to assess the structural damage and any environmental impact once the site is fully secured.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned industrial properties, particularly those with a history of chemical storage. Emergency crews continue to monitor the area to ensure there are no flare-ups or additional risks.
