NJ Transit Announces Strict Action After Rising Violence Against Transit Workers
New Jersey Transit leadership has issued a strong warning after recent violent incidents involving its employees, making it clear that attacks on transit staff will lead to serious consequences, including arrests and potential bans from the system.
NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri stated that any form of violence against frontline workers will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He emphasized that individuals who attempt to harm employees will face strict legal action and could be permanently removed from using public transportation services.
The announcement follows two concerning incidents that have raised safety concerns for both employees and passengers. In the most recent case, a 19-year-old passenger assaulted two conductors on a North Jersey Coast Line train during a dispute over fare payment. The situation escalated quickly, leading to physical harm. Authorities later arrested the individual in Bradley Beach and charged him with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, theft of service, and trespassing.
According to officials, one of the conductors received medical treatment for minor injuries at a nearby hospital, while the second conductor declined treatment despite also being injured. The incident has added to growing concerns about the safety of transit staff who interact directly with passengers on a daily basis.
In a separate earlier case on February 21, a bus driver was physically attacked at the Deptford Mall after informing a passenger that the bus had reached its final stop and he needed to exit. The assault, which was recorded on video, highlighted the risks faced by transit workers during routine duties. Law enforcement authorities are still searching for the suspect involved in that incident and have asked the public for assistance in identifying the individual.
Following these events, NJ Transit leadership has directed its legal team to take all available actions to ensure offenders are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This includes pursuing long-term or maximum-duration bans from the transit system for those found guilty of assaulting employees.
