Newark Celebrates as Local Star Michael B. Jordan Wins First Academy Award

Actor Michael B. Jordan earned his first Academy Award on Sunday night, and the city of Newark is commemorating this momentous occasion. For many locals, the win serves as a potent reminder that someone who was raised in their communities has attained one of the top accolades in the film industry, in addition to being a Hollywood accomplishment.
Jordan, 39, won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing a difficult dual part in the 2025 vampire horror movie “Sinners.” He is now one of the few Black actors to win Best Lead Actor, and the accolade represents a significant turning point in his acting career.
But Jordan’s accomplishment has much more significance for the residents of Newark. His victory, according to citywide educators and community leaders, is a source of pride and motivation for young people who aspire to succeed outside of their immediate environs.
Superintendent of Newark Public Schools Roger León considered Jordan’s transformation from a local student to an actor who won an Academy Award. He pointed out that Jordan was just a teenage student growing up in Newark before to his widespread notoriety. “Jordan’s story now inspires a lot of kids in the city who might be wondering what their future holds,” he said.
“Jordan’s success was not achieved on his own,” he said. He acknowledged the significant contribution Jordan’s family, instructors, and mentors made to his early development. In particular, León emphasized the commitment of Jordan’s mother, Donna, as well as the impact of his acting instructor, Carl Gonzalez, and other teachers who helped him grow in school.
Jordan received his diploma in 2005 from Arts High School in Newark, a popular public high school known for turning out gifted singers and artists. Jordan’s Oscar victory now adds another chapter to the institution’s illustrious alumni history. The school was founded in 1931 and has created a record of creative achievement.
Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark, also discussed the importance of the occasion for the city. He noted that Jordan’s Oscar win was a very proud moment for Newark and that it shows what can happen when skill, willpower, and vision are combined.
Jordan’s narrative, according to Baraka, conveys a crucial message to the city’s youth: no dream is too high or goal is unachievable if one is prepared to put in the necessary effort. He said that Jordan’s continued ties to the city and frequent visits to support the neighborhood that shaped his early existence make the accomplishment even more significant for Newark citizens.
Jordan thanked everyone who helped him along the way during the Academy Awards ceremony, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the film’s viewers and supporters as well as those in the industry who helped him along the road.
Jordan also thanked the viewers who went back to see “Sinners” more than once, claiming that their support was crucial to the movie’s success.
Jordan’s Oscar victory puts him in a unique category in movie history. Only six Black men have won the Best Lead Actor title, including him. Will Smith, who was honored for his performance in the 2021 biographical picture “King Richard,” was the previous winner.
At the age of twelve, Jordan started his acting career, which over time grew to become one of the most well-known in Hollywood. He gained respect from both audiences and critics over the years by taking on challenging and complicated roles.
Hasani K. Council, president of the Newark Board of Education, stated that the entire city participates in the celebration after the Oscar announcement. Jordan has always carried his hometown identity with him throughout his career, according to Council, and his accomplishment now demonstrates to Newark children that hard work and self-belief can lead to the highest levels of success.
Jordan’s prize is more than just a personal achievement for many locals. It represents the potential for a new generation to grow up in the same communities, schools, and neighborhoods where his own journey started.
Jordan’s transformation from a local kid to an Academy Award winner is now regarded as one of the city’s most inspirational success stories as festivities continue around Newark.
