Newark Airport Donated a 9/11 Gate Sign to the Flight 93 National Memorial
The Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania now houses a piece of New Jersey history linked to one of the worst days in American history. The airport received the Gate A17 sign from Newark Liberty International Airport, where United Airlines Flight 93 took off on 9/11.
I now think of Flight 93’s bravery when I see the sign, which was formerly ordinary. Their actions are remembered as one of the bravest in recent American history.
Showing Courage and Giving Up
On 9/11 morning, Flight 93 left Newark for San Francisco. Terrorists grabbed control of the jet shortly after takeoff and planned to crash it into a major Washington, D.C. target. Investigation indicated the goal could have been the White House or Capitol.
But the passengers prevented that. After learning about the earlier attacks, passengers and crew fought back. The jet crashed in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania field instead of a national landmark because the passengers resisted. All 40 on board, including the crew, died, yet their bravery prevented a larger calamity.
The Memorial Houses a Historic Sign
For years, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey kept the Gate A17 sign. The National Park Service, which runs the Flight 93 National Memorial, received it Friday. Memorials memorialize the dead and instruct future generations.
National Park Service interpretation, education, and visitor services chief Adam Shaffer stressed the importance of remembering that day. He stated regular people who started their day like anyone else made history-changing decisions.
At the event, Shaffer gave Port Authority General Manager Aidan O’Donnell an American flag. This was meant to show how closely Newark Airport is to Flight 93.
Honoring Future Heroes
Everyone who visits the Flight 93 National Memorial can see 9/11 history thanks to the sign contribution. The National Park Service is seeking to determine where to install the Gate A17 sign to remind tourists of their bravery on that horrible day.
Flight 93 is about people rallying and saving lives. In dangerous situations, passengers and staff from various backgrounds united. Gate A17 represents courage and morality, not just an airport sign.
The Gate A17 sign promotes bravery, endurance, and unity as the US commemorates the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
