New Session of HOW Job Training for Women Set to Begin This September

Free job training program for women

Project Self-Sufficiency in Newton, New Jersey will begin its Higher Opportunities for Women (HOW) employment training program on September 23. This sixteen-week program gives local women the skills, experience, and confidence to land entry-level administrative or office-support jobs.

How it combines computer training, classroom instruction, and real-world experience. Participants will receive 80 hours of computer skills training, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and 40 hours of classroom instruction. The curriculum offers a 120-hour unpaid internship with community employers to connect classroom learning to real-world work. Beyond technical training, the curriculum prepares underemployed or unemployed women for job navigation, life skills, resume writing, and interviews.

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 3:00 are class days. All seminars are held at Project Self-Sufficiency’s Newton facility, 127 Mill Street. If you want a shorter session, “Summer Office Skills,” is offered in July and August. Local residents can enroll for free.

Project Self-Sufficiency is holding numerous open houses before the program begins to let interested applicants learn more. Open houses will be held at 4:00 p.m. on September 10 and 17, and 10:00 a.m. on September 11. Contact the organization to register and learn about eligibility and enrollment.

Over 1,000 women have gained valuable skills, confidence, and economic independence via this HOW program. The Executive Director said the program teaches employment skills and builds self-confidence in a changing job market to prepare participants for success.
