New Jersey Secures $73 Million for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations After Court Victory

New Jersey won $73 million in federal funds for electric vehicle charging infrastructure after suing the Trump administration. The funding was restored when a U.S. District Court declared the previous administration wrongfully blocked the disbursement of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program funds.

After President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending funding for a statewide network of fast electric vehicle chargers in 2025, the state, Delaware, New York, and 14 other states sued. New Jersey won a major victory, allowing the state to extend its charging infrastructure for residents and commuters.

Increasing electric car availability and lowering transportation costs are directly supported by the verdict, according to the New Jersey Attorney General. The AG called the court’s judgment a major step toward improving the state’s transportation system and encouraging clean energy.

The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law budgeted $7.5 billion for national electric vehicle charging networks. This amount includes $5 billion for state plans to install fast charging stations on major roadways. These stations can charge an electric vehicle battery to 80% in 20 minutes to an hour, making them speedier and more convenient.

The Federal Highway Administration said it has fulfilled its commitments to states by issuing revised recommendations on safety, efficiency, and innovation. New Jersey and other states can now obligate federal cash for electric car infrastructure installation and expansion with amended state plans.

This court ruling assures that New Jersey receives its cash and maintains the state’s commitment to clean transportation, sustainable infrastructure, and electric vehicle adoption by residents and commuters.
