New Bill Could Give New Jersey Residents Early Access to Island Beach Fishing Permits

New Jersey lawmakers are making Island Beach State Park fishing permits easier to get after worries over a new lottery method that denied many. The Senate would prioritize locals in the permit procedure to allow inhabitants to visit one of the state’s most popular recreational places.

S-4775, introduced by Senator Shirley Turner, would require the DEP to give New Jerseyans 14 days to obtain mobile sport fishing permits. The DEP introduced a lottery system for 2026 because to high permit demand, prohibiting many residents from acquiring permits.

Senator Carmen Amato Jr. exhibits bipartisan support as the bill’s second lead sponsor. Assemblymen Brian Rumpf and Gregory Myhre will also introduce a companion bill to improve Island Beach access.

Lawmakers accept the DEP’s concerns due to increased fishing permit demand. New Jersey families and fisherman love the park, so residents should have a fair chance to enjoy it. Residents must obtain licenses to limit public access and accommodate non-resident visitors later in the season.

The measure is before the Senate Environment and Energy Committee. Changing Island Beach fishing permit distribution will favor local anglers and prevent internet lottery systems from excluding state citizens.
