N.J. Police Face Gunfire During Christmas Night Domestic Call, Suspect Arrested

A New Jersey man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a handgun at police officers responding to a domestic disturbance on Christmas night. The incident took place in Hamilton Township, raising serious concerns about the risks law enforcement officers face during emergency calls.

The suspect, 69-year-old Stephen Pofi of Mays Landing, was taken into custody on Thursday following the alarming incident on North Street. Authorities reported that the situation began when Pofi’s wife called police, stating that he was armed with both a knife and a handgun and had already discharged a firearm inside their home. She left the residence safely before the arrival of law enforcement officers.

Upon arriving at the scene around 9:16 p.m., officers attempted to make contact with Pofi outside the home. Despite their efforts, Pofi refused to comply with police instructions. During this time, he allegedly fired the handgun in the direction of the responding officers, who were fortunately unharmed.

Law enforcement acted quickly to secure the scene, and Pofi was apprehended without further incident. Following the arrest, he was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault with a firearm, obstruction, harassment, and resisting arrest. He is currently being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Mays Landing.

This incident underscores the dangers officers face in domestic violence situations, particularly when firearms are involved. It also highlights the importance of swift reporting and careful coordination by law enforcement to prevent further harm. While no injuries were reported among the officers, the situation remains a stark reminder of the unpredictability and risk present in such calls.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine any additional factors that may have contributed to the escalation. The charges against Pofi reflect the seriousness of his actions and the potential threat posed to both civilians and law enforcement personnel during such events.
