Famous actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, renowned for portraying Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died at 54 from an accidental drowning in Costa Rica while on vacation. Warner was swimming off Limón’s Cocles Beach on Sunday, July 20. The witnesses said he was swept up in a strong rip current. Oncoming bystanders performed CPR until Costa Rican Red Cross personnel arrived. He died on the scene despite their efforts. Submersion-induced asphyxia was the official cause of death.

 

Born August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Malcolm-Jamal Warner played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 until 1992, making him a household figure in the 1980s. A 1986 Emmy nomination and a distinguished television career followed his performance. Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, The Resident, and Suits were among his subsequent roles. His voice was on The Magic School Bus, and he directed several TV shows. He received a 2015 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

 

Warner continued to work in entertainment. His podcast Not All Hood covered a variety of Black American experiences. He continued acting in shows like 9-1-1 and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. Warner, a versatile actor, was renowned for his depth and honesty.
