Labor Day Travelers See Relief at the Pump as Trump press secretary Highlights Five-Year Gas Price Low

Gas prices stand out as millions of Americans prepare to drive for Labor Day weekend. Gas prices are at their lowest in five years this year, which is good news for drivers. According to the White House and President Donald Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt, the administration’s measures caused the reduction and gave households nationwide economic relief.
Leavitt told a Thursday press briefing that decreased prices are helping consumers stretch their budgets more than before. She added that families traveling this weekend are saving money on fuel, allowing them to spend more elsewhere. This milestone contrasts with rising costs that many Americans faced before Trump’s administration, she says.
Industry trackers like GasBuddy predict a $3.15 national average gas price for the holiday. Prices dropped 14 cents from last year and are at their lowest since 2020, when they were $2.22. The organization also predicted that costs could fall below $3 in the fall.
GasBuddy head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan called summer 2025 one of the cheapest travel seasons since the pandemic. While earnings are growing, petrol prices are falling, making road trips easier for Americans who want to travel. He warned that hurricane season, global trade disputes, and geopolitical conflicts might still affect expenses.
President Trump said costs have dropped to $2 per gallon in some locations. He claimed that southern states have seen dramatic drops, although analysts clarified that costs have not dropped below $2 but have declined significantly compared to previous year’s averages. California’s fuel taxes are higher than the national average, but drivers are paying less.
This decline benefits New Jersey drivers too. AAA reports that the state’s average gallon price is $3.05, far below the national average of $3.21. This reduction is welcome for Garden State families planning end-of-summer vacations on the Jersey Shore and elsewhere.
The prognosis is for a cheaper fall season for vacationers nationwide. With other mounting costs straining household budgets, a gas pump break is welcome. The five-year drop in prices is a crucial talking point for the Trump administration ahead of a weekend when millions will travel.
