Kean University Launches New Jersey’s First Bachelor’s Program in Artificial Intelligence

Kean University is the first New Jersey university to offer a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence. The new program will launch this autumn as part of the university’s commitment to prepare students for the fast-growing AI industry.
Kean President Lamont O. Repollet announced the announcement at his annual opening address at the Union County campus, emphasizing how artificial intelligence would change education and the workforce. Repollet said Kean’s project prepares students for professions in a world where innovation, technology, and creativity are interwoven.
Kean launched its bachelor’s degree and its Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, which will promote AI research, training, and industry applications. Faculty will use AI-driven tutors, mentors, and research platforms to improve learning.
The program gives students hands-on experience in high-demand tech fields. The course will address large language model creation, ethical AI use, and machine learning in health care, finance, education, and cybersecurity. The program equips graduates with the abilities to succeed in one of the fastest-growing industries.
Kean’s bachelor of artificial intelligence degree comes as AI education is growing countrywide. Penn State recently announced an undergraduate AI engineering degree, joining more than a dozen US universities. Kean is positioning New Jersey students to compete for high-paying computer science, data science, and AI development jobs nationwide by developing its own program.
The university’s “Elevate 2030” strategic plan, which describes its vision for the next five years, includes artificial intelligence, according to Repollet, who was New Jersey’s commissioner of education. AI will alter learning and research, pushing higher education boundaries, he said.
Kean is also developing an AI platform dubbed “Keanu AI,” named after its cougar mascot, in addition to its degree and research center. The platform will provide students, staff, and researchers with a unique digital resource, integrating AI into campus life.
This program is part of a larger trend of colleges and universities responding to technology-driven labor markets. As enterprises worldwide use AI tools, New Jersey students can receive specialized training without leaving the state. Kean’s new degree opens doors to one of the most exciting and future-focused careers for many IT students.
