How New Jersey Lawmakers Are Working to Make Schools Safer During Active Shooter Emergencies

The New Jersey Legislature has filed legislation to mandate all school districts to install external key boxes by 2027. The boxes would contain keys, access cards, and other essentials for responders, as well as updated maps and important incident data.
The proposed laws allocate $2.5 million to equip every K-12 school in the state with a key box. Law enforcement says these boxes might drastically reduce emergency response times. Officers often spend time hunting for keys, navigating combination locks, or finding facility staff who can allow entrance without instant access. Eliminating these hurdles lets responders safeguard children and staff, perhaps saving lives and limiting injuries.
Many schools have lockboxes for fire department access as needed by fire codes, however they are not ideal for law enforcement. Fire department boxes usually have one primary access key and may not be strategically placed for tactical emergency response. Multi-key, access device, and crucial information solutions are needed by law enforcement. New key boxes would be placed in optimal places to allow first responders to access swiftly and safely without damaging the property.
The New Jersey School Boards Association and New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association endorse this project. Schools may improve emergency preparedness and give law enforcement the tools they need by taking this modest step. To better protect schools, students, and staff, lawmakers want the Senate and Assembly to approve these laws soon.
Faster reaction times, less property damage, fewer injuries, and a safer New Jersey school environment are the goals. The state can prevent tragedies during critical incidents by installing key boxes in schools and giving law enforcement access.
