George Santos Claims Solitary Confinement After Death Threats at New Jersey Prison

After death threats, disgraced former Congressman George Santos is in solitary confinement at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fairton in Cumberland County, New Jersey. Santos wrote a handwritten letter on September 4, 2025, detailing his captivity and conditions.
On August 28, Santos’ lawyer emailed him that an investigative reporter had informed him of a possible jail murder plot. Santos’s lawyer alerted the facility’s warden, which led to his solitary incarceration, while discounting the threat as another false accusation. He was told by SIS officers that he would be sent to the SHU for protection.
Santos said the SHU “tortures people” and is “hell on earth.” He described his 15×17-foot cage as musty, unventilated, and his only drinking water from the toilet top. He said the shower only had ice-cold water and available three times a week. He further said that the soap doesn’t lather and that he gets recycled undergarments from other detainees.
Santos complained that he has been refused daily contacts to his family and that his husband was turned away after driving over three hours to see him. He said that he gets “tortured every day” under the pretense of safety.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not addressed Santos’ criticism. Santos said the FBI is probing his death threats, which may extend his solitary detention.
Santos, 36, began his seven-year prison sentence in July after pleading guilty to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He admits to defrauding donors and stealing dozens of identities to support his congressional campaign. Santos wrote to President Donald Trump again requesting clemency, calling his condition a “horrid situation.”
Santos endures harsh conditions in solitary detention while the death threats investigation continues. His case has highlighted federal prisoner treatment and the balance between security and human rights.
