Former High School Coach Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault of Student in Monmouth County

The former Monmouth County high school teacher and basketball coach who admitted to sexually assaulting a teen at home could serve a long prison sentence. This week, 36-year-old Justin M. McGhee pleaded guilty to sexual assault, ending a difficult time for the school and community.
On February 20, McGhee will serve five years and six months in prison. Middletown High School North girls’ basketball head coach and physical education teacher McGhee must register as a sex offender, cannot contact the victim, and cannot attend.
Ocean Township police found attack evidence in McGhee’s basement. The victim was 16 or 17 when injured last year. High school assistant football coach McGhee was interviewed by investigators.
Middletown police received a tip about McGhee’s inappropriate relationship with a student in December 2024. The investigation revealed the student’s name. The girl and parents contacted police. Police arrived after school officials received similar emails about the issue.
McGhee was suspended from teaching and coaching after his arrest. People worried about school supervision and safety after the event. Breaking trust by a leader shocked and disappointed the community.
This case emphasizes the importance of reporting sexual misconduct to protect students and punish offenders. Police want everyone who knows about this abuse to report it so they can stop it.
