Former Fire Chief and Police Officer Faces Assault Allegations from Subordinates

Former Toms River senior fire official accused of hitting firefighters at home and elsewhere. Former Island Heights police officer Sinnott Jr. faces multiple criminal sexual contact and official misconduct allegations.

Court documents say Sinnott deceived three firefighters into training at his home. He allegedly handcuffed and sexually attacked the victims while taking photos. Sinnott allegedly handcuffed and headlocked a firefighter in August 2022 and forced indecent contact.

Sinnott allegedly detained and sexually assaulted another firefighter while filming in July 2022. A third firefighter was abused in February 2023 while inspecting a Silverton Volunteer Fire Company fire hydrant. Sinnott allegedly locked the victim in his car during unwelcome contact and tormented him.

The victims first saw Sinnott as a community mentor and respected figure, according to the affidavit. They delayed reporting for fear of retaliation and career consequences. Sinnott’s law enforcement and 2006 Toms River Fire District 2 service may have intimidated victims.

Sinnott was captured in Cape Coral. He awaits extradition to New Jersey in Lee County jail. In March, the three firefighters sued Sinnott for grooming, abusing, and intimidating them throughout mentorship and training, along with criminal allegations.

This case shows emergency services’ authority abuse and the necessity for oversight and responsibility. The allegations illustrate that subordinates who trust experienced leaders are susceptible and need workplace safety precautions.

Sinnott will face criminal and civil charges and issues about first responder protections.
