Fatal Pedestrian Crash on NJ Route 33 Claims One Life, Injures Another

One pedestrian was killed by a car on a busy East Windsor route on Sunday, May 19. Route 33 westbound at Twin Rivers Drive North in the city. Driving under a green light, a driver hit two people crossing Route 33 east-west.
East Windsor resident Fausto Chacha-Pintado, 45, died. He died in Trenton after state police flew him there. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital received 50-year-old Elena Mateo from East Windsor with serious injuries.
Driving west on Route 33, 30-year-old Liana Abbate wrecked. Police say the vehicle hit something at a green light. State and city police are examining an accident photograph for lighting, signage, and visibility.
This showed the perils of walking in East Windsor’s Twin Rivers neighborhood, especially where Route 33 crosses. Residents and government authorities believe early warning signs and clearer crosswalks will improve traffic and pedestrian safety. Township officials worry about car-pedestrian accidents on this road.
After the terrible accident, the town will assess road crossings for flashing or brighter lights. Safer routes will be created with NJDOT. Elena Mateo was badly injured and Fausto Chacha-Pintado died on multilane roads. The motorist followed the traffic light, but the walkers tried to cross into fast-moving westbound cars, investigators determined.
My local police urge pedestrians to cross streets carefully, be seen at night, and use pedestrian crossings when available. To reduce fatalities, police will assess lighting, driving attention, and walker conduct. The inquiry is ongoing, thus no one gets charged.
