Fast-Moving N.J. Fire Forces Residents Into a Desperate Choice: Jump or Be Trapped

A two-story Elizabeth home on Stiles Avenue burnt swiftly Saturday morning, causing anxiety. Residents jumped out windows due to smoke and fire.
The 9 a.m. fire caused the building to smoke heavily within minutes. Residents smelled smoke in the morning and knew they had little time to work. Many ran to the doors, but smoke and heat blocked several. Jumping from upper-floor windows saved several residents.
Locals said 80 firefighters rushed to the location and tackled the fire. Fire spread to a nearby house before anyone could put it out. While street spectators watched, firefighters fought fires in both buildings until morning. Unexpected escape shocked and baffled many.
They claimed six people were sent to surrounding hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Responders suspected smoke inhalation and falling while escaping caused most injuries.
Unable to quit smoking, one resident complained. He hurried outdoors but saw flames swiftly spread to the next house. Several families fled with only cloths.
After the fire, Red Cross helped. Clothing, short-term aid, and emergency aid were given to homeless persons. The fire’s cause was investigated all afternoon.
Stiles Avenue suffered beyond structures. More than anything, it scared many. House losers decide what to do while the fire’s cause is investigated.
