Emergency City Funding Keeps Hackensack Schools Fully Staffed Through End of School Year

A local emergency decision prevented a large New Jersey school system from laying off scores of teachers and staff due to a financial crisis.
Hackensack municipal leaders supported the school district last week after discovering a $17 million budget gap. Without urgent action, the shortfall might have resulted in 90 teacher and staff layoffs and disruptive midyear academic program changes.
The Hackensack City Council unanimously approved a $6.5 million emergency transfer to the school district to avoid that. Schools can operate properly until June 30, the conclusion of the academic year, with the funds.
City officials verified that Hackensack’s $21.8 million municipal budget surplus will cover the emergency funds, avoiding new taxes or borrowing. Council members stressed that the measure was required to protect kids, educators, and families from unanticipated school interruptions.
Hackensack Board of Education opted to accept the funding later that day, allowing the district to maintain staffing and avoid reducing key programs. Officials said emergency support gives schools breathing room while budget options are considered.
Layoffs at this time of year would have increased class sizes, cut student support services, and exacerbated school employee instability, according to education activists and municipal authorities. The city maintained classroom consistency and student learning requirements by acting fast.
Emergency funding addresses the issue, but authorities acknowledged that the district still confronts financial challenges that must be addressed in future budget planning cycles. To avoid future deficits, local leaders and school authorities will continue to meet.
Hackensack schools would stay fully staffed, allowing students to conclude the school year without disruption, which municipal leaders said was crucial for community stability and trust in public education.
