Driver Fatally Injured After Multi-Vehicle Collision on Southbound New Jersey Route

The late Saturday night crash on southbound New Jersey Route 55 in Gloucester County killed a 63-year-old Newfield man. The New Jersey State Police reported it at 10:05 p.m. near milepost 47.6 in Elk Township.

David E. Hartman, a Jeep driver, hit a Nissan SUV moving south, according to police. A southbound Ford slammed the Jeep shortly after. The first crash produced the second. Jeep caught fire in the middle of the highway.

Hartman died at the crime scene. Six Nissan passengers were lightly injured. They were transferred to local hospitals. Ford’s driver was injured, although not badly. Someone was brought to a local hospital for treatment. State police said they’re still investigating.

They claimed the pre-crash steps are still being examined. This includes road conditions, driver behavior, and car speed. The sparky incident shows how awful things can go when multiple cars collide and one hit sparks a chain reaction.

This is the latest of many horrific Route 55 accidents in recent months. While detectives investigate, police advise drivers to remain away from other automobiles, be careful in the weather, and follow speed limits.
