Donald Trump Criticizes NFL’s New Kickoff Rule, Says It Hurts the Game and Pageantry

Former President Donald Trump again criticized the NFL’s updated kickoff rule. On a popular sports podcast, Trump called the new system “terrible” for reducing football games’ excitement and spectacle. Trump claims the changes reduce safety and fans’ favorite flow and pageantry.

Trump, who mixes politics and sports, told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that high-speed collisions between players remain a risk despite rule changes. He said he could “get in a little trouble” for being direct and called the kickoff format “demeaning”.

The new NFL “Dynamic Kickoff” rearranges the kicking and receiving teams. To reduce collisions, the coverage team must start at the receiving team’s 40-yard line while the kicker kicks from 35. Setup zone requires nine receivers and two returners near the end zone. Players cannot move until the ball lands in a zone or crosses the end line, adjusting touchbacks and possession rules.

The league wanted to keep kickoff returns exciting while reducing player injuries, but Trump’s comments reflect a larger sentiment among fans who feel the changes compromise NFL games’ thrill and tradition. He said the new system changes a beloved part of football without making it safer.

Trump’s political and sports comments continue to garner media attention, solidifying his reputation as a commentator on national events and popular culture, including professional sports. His criticism of the NFL kickoff rule highlighted the ongoing debate between player safety and classic style and excitement.
