Donald Trump Acknowledges White House East Wing Demolition Was Unnecessary for His New Ballroom

President Trump reignited debate by candidly stating that he would demolish the East Wing of the White House to build his private ballroom. Trump said in a recent interview that demolishing the historic section was unnecessary but justified it as part of the project’s vision.
Last month, crews removed parts of the East Wing, a modest building that had been renovated many times, drawing criticism. Critics, including Michelle Obama, worried about changing a historic White House area. Trump said the building was in poor condition and building the ballroom around it would have compromised the design.
“This small structure had been renovated many times and looked worn out,” Trump said. Our ballroom should be world-class, but we could have preserved it. To clarify, no government funds were used. Project is privately funded.”
Before Trump leaves office, the administration hopes to finish the 90,000-square-foot ballroom. Although private donations are covering the costs, the White House noted that past presidents changed the complex by converting recreational areas for multiple uses.
In addition, Melania Trump initially opposed removing the East Wing, where her offices and staff were. He said she supported the project after seeing the updated plans, noting that the building had undergone at least twenty renovations, many of which were improper.
The administration has identified some $300 million project donors, but others remain anonymous. Since many corporate and individual donors have received large government contracts, government watchdog groups are concerned about potential conflicts of interest. Despite these warnings, the White House claims private, taxpayer-free ballroom construction.
Some praised Trump’s White House modernization, while others questioned the need to change a historic building.
