City of Hoboken to Begin Automated Camera Enforcement for Illegal Parking

Hoboken

Hoboken, NJ— Hoboken will implement automated camera-based enforcement on October 1, 2025, to minimize illegal parking, congestion, and road safety. The city’s new CLEAR (Camera-based License plate Enforcement for Access & Response times) system will ticket traffic-blocking cars, especially on Washington Street between Observer Highway and Eighth Street.

Hoboken’s Vision Zero CLEAR initiative targets bike lane double parking, bus stop parking, and loading zone misuse. The Hoboken Council allowed the cameras to photograph illegally parked cars in 2024. The photos will be reviewed by Hoboken Parking Utility inspectors to see if each offense warrants a penalty. Car owners will receive mail citations if so.

Communities say the move addresses public concerns and traffic data showing parking violations have caused safety hazards and delays for walkers, cyclists, autos, and emergency vehicles. Hoboken studies show long-term bike lane blocks, double parking, and bus stop blocks. Many believe that blocked lanes and poor loading zone utilization reduce intersection visibility and emergency vehicle response, increasing accident risk.

Before enforcement, Hoboken will inform residents, businesses, and commuters about the system, cameras, and offenses. The goal is behavior modification, safety, and clear transport and pedestrian lanes, not punishment, officials say.

Park cautiously and watch for signs and alerts as enforcement begins next month. Even minor loading zone, bus stop, and double parking violations may be reviewed. City administrators think visible, automated enforcement will reduce repeat offenses and improve Hoboken’s travel corridors.
