Campaign Adviser’s Remarks Ignite Turmoil in New Jersey Governor Race

Several Jewish, LGBTQ+, and other advocacy groups criticized a Republican campaign adviser’s remarks, igniting a new New Jersey governor’s race scandal. At a Piscataway rally, Ciattarelli’s volunteer Muslim liaison, Dr. Ibrar Nadeem, told supporters that if elected, he will repeal same-sex marriage legislation. He answered, “I check my bank account every day, brother,” and refused Jewish donations. Not present.” One of the most heated campaign moments was the video of these statements, which political opponents and community groups condemned.
Nadeem told the Muslims4Jack protesters that Ciattarelli had voted against same-sex marriage in the state Assembly, saying, “We talk about family. Marriage makes families. Different gender. Marriage after same-sex.” Antisemitic comments against Jewish benefactors, when he denied taking donations, upset many.
Ciattarelli took the platform after Nadeem addressed the issue but did not respond. He advised Nadeem to “just once say exactly what’s on his mind.” Critics say the candidate’s inability to distance himself from the remarks undermines his leadership and judgment.
After significant criticism, Ciattarelli stood with Jews and supported same-sex marriage on social media. He said Nadeem’s words were misconstrued and that his adviser was criticizing Ciattarelli’s Israel and interfaith support. Republicans accused Democratic opponent Mikie Sherrill of misrepresenting their civil rights and religious unity views.
Democrat and advocacy groups disagreed. They branded the remarks “vile and divisive,” urging Ciattarelli to dismiss Nadeem from his campaign. Local and Jewish leaders called the remarks bigoted and a danger to New Jersey’s inclusive values. LGBTQ+ advocates said the statements illustrated how vulnerable marriage equality is, especially in states where same-sex marriage has been legal for years.
Ciattarelli’s campaign advisers defended their beliefs. They said political alliances usually include people with different ideas, but disagreement does not imply endorsement. The controversy overshadows campaign themes including the economy, education, and public safety despite this response.
Time matters with this situation. Ciattarelli has been reaching out to numerous groups, including Jewish voters, promising greater antisemitism and more inclusive state leadership as the election approaches. This incident casts doubt on whether his approach encourages unity and respect, endangering those efforts.
Democratic leaders, supported by Sherrill, have used the disagreement to portray Ciattarelli as out of touch with New Jersey values. They claim his silence and delayed response show a reluctance to combat racism. Many observers see the situation as a test of the candidate’s character and campaign.
Nadeem’s comments may influence key state voting blocs as the election heats up. Ciattarelli’s handling of marital equality and religious diversity in the next days could determine if his campaign recovers in the final days. New Jersey has historically supported these issues.
