Bookstore Cancels Palestinian Author Launch After Intense Community Pushback

Montclair residents’ outrage at the author’s Palestinian origin forced the cancellation of a children’s book program. Palestinian-American writer Jenan Matari said Watchung Booksellers canceled her book launch for Everything Grows in Jiddo’s Garden due to safety concerns. Jewish community members warned of the tragedy.
Matari said her appearance was criticized verbally and aggressively. She says neighborhood members, including a rabbi, accosted bookshop personnel and demanded cancellation via email. Some letters called her anti-Israel and promoted hate and destruction. Matari dismissed them as unfounded. The business canceled her event because personnel felt vulnerable under pressure.
The picture book Everything Grows in Jiddo’s Garden follows a Palestinian girl and her grandfather who must leave their hometown but preserve their connection through gardening. The story explores displacement, belonging, and land preservation. Matari’s first novel.
Matari claimed the decision indicates a practice of suppressing Palestinian stories. She said those who tried to suppress her were the actual menace. After the postponement, her supporters promptly organized a new event.
The episode has raised questions regarding free speech, cultural expression, and whether bookstores and public spaces should comply with political or ethnic identity demands. Matari notes that when Palestinian authors are banned or events are canceled due to their nationality, children miss out on varied perspectives and stories.
This dispute is set against the backdrop of the Gaza war and international concern for civilians and cultural voices.
