Bomb Threats Force Temporary Relocations at Multiple New Jersey Polling Sites

Email bomb threats from separate counties closed or changed certain New Jersey voting booths on Election Day. Authorities promptly denied the threats, but the anxiety deterred some from voting early, raising concerns about election day safety and system faith.

Due to bomb threats, police and emergency services headed to voting centers in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic counties early Tuesday morning. The officials stated they investigated all threats and found no bombs or other unusual items. After security checks, most polling sites reopened later that morning and voting continued.

They went to Trenton’s Hedgepeth-Williams Elementary School at 5 a.m. because they were afraid. The K-9 found nothing hazardous. No one went to school on Election Day, but everyone could vote. A bogus threat was delivered to adjacent Ewing High School.

Middlesex County police ordered everyone out of Livingston Park Elementary School in North Brunswick after receiving an email threat. Warnings led to a child’s arrest. Avenel Middle School’s voting place was closed due to Woodbridge police investigation. Voters visited Woodbine Avenue Elementary.

A threat sent police to Paterson School 10, causing havoc in Passaic County. Local officials said voting locations were sealed and verified before reopening. The Paterson mayor commended police and state officials for keeping voters safe and calm during the election.

Bergen County reported a “pattern” of email threats. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office assured homeowners all was well and no suspicious devices were located. The city, county, and state police worked closely to secure election sites all day.

Lt. Governor and Secretary of State Tahesha Way assured voters of protection. She stated no polling stations were in risk and complimented the police for acting immediately. State officials said they are working with federal officials to determine the emails’ source and prevent other issues.

New Jersey voters voted well despite temporary evacuations and additional police. Many polls were open longer to make up for lost time. Voters were praised for patience and cooperation in politics.

Recent phony bomb scares demonstrate the need of election preparation and safety. The police eventually cleared the way for voters to exercise their rights.
