Aroldis Chapman Extends Career with Red Sox After Stellar Season Against Former Team

Former Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman will continue in Boston after extending his contract through 2026. Under the $13.3 million agreement with a mutual option for 2027, the experienced reliever will help the Red Sox build on current momentum.

Since arrival, 37-year-old Chapman has dominated Boston. After being known for his flame-throwing fastball and late-inning struggles, the Cuban-born pitcher has shined in a Red Sox uniform. He’s impressed with 27 saves, 76 strikeouts, and a 1.02 ERA this season, disproving peak performance concerns.

His revival was consistent. After 15 consecutive hitless innings, Chapman is one of the league’s most reliable closers. Boston’s coaches and players credit his clubhouse leadership and preparation for the turnaround.

Manager Alex Cora said the senior pitcher’s on- and off-field presence inspires younger players. Cora said Chapman is as crucial to Boston’s long-term strategy in the clubhouse as he is at finishing games.

Red Sox intend to keep Chapman for future roster-building. Brayan Bello, Ceddanne Rafaela, Garrett Crochet, Kristian Campbell, and Roman Anthony are new additions. Boston is pairing proven players like Chapman with young players for long-term success.

Given Chapman’s Yankees history, the move is symbolic. After throwing for New York from 2017 to 2022, he performs in a rival’s bullpen despite criticism for his high-pressure performances. His reinventions have boosted Boston’s pitching and heightened the Yankees–Red Sox rivalry.

Chapman’s deal indicates the Red Sox’s confidence in his bullpen and stability into 2026. With his effectiveness this year and ability to handle high-leverage situations, Boston fans can expect Chapman to close games at Fenway Park for at least another year—possibly two if the 2027 option is activated.
