AOC Joins Forces with GOP Lawmakers on Historic Stock Trading Ban for Congress

On Wednesday, Republican lawmakers and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supported a congressional stock trading ban. Rare Washington bipartisanship shows commitment to federal transparency and accountability.
Ocasio-Cortez, Burchett, Roy, and Luna introduced the bill. Since elected officials’ stock trading is under scrutiny, this cross-party effort to prevent conflicts of interest and restore public faith in Congress is crucial.
“This is one of those rare moments in Washington where collaboration actually improves a bill,” Ocasio-Cortez remarked. Sometimes stakeholders compromise and nothing changes, but this legislation is stronger than any part. Though unusual, it shows progress is possible.”
She said the bill highlighted what happens when lawmakers value people. The law will “increase and earn the faith of the American people,” ensuring Congress operates ethically and honestly, said Ocasio-Cortez. She was enthusiastic about passing the plan and commended MPs’ cooperation.
The bill addresses U.S. government ethics and financial monitoring. Past stock trading prohibitions, including one by former President Donald Trump targeting senators and legislative leaders, have caused controversy and highlighted ideological differences in conflict resolution. Trump blasted Senator Josh Hawley’s similar bill for putting politics before people.
Ocasio-Cortez and her GOP colleagues say the new law is a genuine attempt to fix the system and foster confidence, despite difficulties. This would limit Congress members’ stock trading to remove financial incentives that conflict with their obligations and align legislative activity with citizens’ interests.
Washington can hope from a bipartisan endeavor showing that ethical government can unite parties. Experts say the measure might increase openness, accountability, government surveillance, and congressional ethics.
Ocasio-Cortez concluded that reform in a politically divided society is difficult but that public support may lead to change. She said it proved Congress can cooperate towards shared goals rather than party objectives.
This historic bipartisan collaboration shows that politicians can work together to pass big laws that benefit the American people even in a heated political climate. Supporters hope the House passes the bill to promote government transparency and integrity.
