Americans Give Trump Low Marks on Economic Promises as Inflation Concerns Persist

Numerous Americans are dissatisfied with President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, the major subject of his 2024 campaign. A CBS News/YouGov poll found that many Americans believe Trump has failed to control inflation and cut the cost of living.
According to a January 14–16 poll of 2,523 individuals, 74% of Americans think Trump is not doing enough to lower prices, while 23% think he is. Just 3% think he’s overly focused on the economy. This shows growing discontent as households struggle to pay escalating bills.
Many Americans believe that their incomes are not keeping pace with rising prices despite campaign promises to limit inflation. The poll indicated that 76% of respondents’ incomes have not kept up with rising costs of living, while 24% have. These data indicate that many people still struggle with groceries, housing, and healthcare.
Over the past year, 44% of poll respondents say Trump’s economic policies have hurt them financially. Of those, 38% claimed his policies had no effect on their finances, and 18% said they were better off. Many Americans have not seen tangible relief despite levies on foreign items.
Trump’s economic approval ratings remain poor. 61% of Americans disapproved of his economic stewardship, 39% approved. Similarly, 65% disapproved of his inflation management, leaving 35% satisfied. However, the survey found that more Americans trust Trump and Republicans to manage the economy than Democrats. Republicans were favored by 33% of respondents above Democrats.
Trump has 41% approval and 59% disapproval, suggesting doubt about his administration’s ability to deliver on campaign pledges. Americans remain concerned about inflation and the cost of living, therefore the president must address economic issues before his second term ends.
