Alex Cora’s Risky Decisions Put Red Sox in Tough Spot as Yankees Even the Series

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is under fire for two pitching decisions that could effect the Yankees series. After 117 pitches, Cora withdrew Brayan Bello after three innings in Game 2. Yankees triumphed 4-3 to even the series heading into Game 3 after Boston relied on its bullpen.

Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay stated Cora “managed this game as if there is no tomorrow.” Kay believes Cora may have injured his bullpen for the series finale by using seven pitchers in Game 2, including top reliever Garrett Whitlock. But knowing Boston’s pitching depth will be tested again on Thursday gave the Yankees confidence.

With several left-handed hitters and a deep lefty relief pool, Cora acknowledged he was right to be aggressive. He acknowledged the adverse situation and recommended Bello to prepare for his next chance. Despite his explanation, the choice has generated doubts about whether he over-managed when waiting would have been better.

Boston was angry when Game 2 Yankees guys not in Game 1 shined. New York led 2-0 after Ben Rice hit a two-run homer on his first postseason pitch. Jazz Chisholm, unhappy not to play in Game 1, showed hustle and drive. Chisholm started a double play in the third, blocked a go-ahead run in the eighth, and worked a tough at-bat that resulted in a walk. He scored the winning run sliding head-first from first base.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has not determined whether Rice or veteran Paul Goldschmidt will play first base in Game 3. Chisholm will start. Despite Boone’s decision, the Yankees approach the final game with momentum, while Cora wonders if his pitching staff has decided the series.
