Lakewood Police Arrest Man Accused of Targeting Synagogues in Overnight Burglaries

A 24-year-old Lakewood man has been arrested after police said several synagogues in the township were burglarized during overnight break-ins that allegedly involved stolen cash from donation and charity boxes.
According to authorities, the investigation began after a series of burglaries were reported at synagogues across Lakewood starting in March. Police said the suspect allegedly entered the religious properties during late-night hours and removed money from donation bins and charity collection boxes kept inside the buildings.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Naor Chen after reviewing surveillance footage connected to the incidents. Law enforcement officials said the footage played an important role in tracking the suspect and linking him to multiple reported break-ins.
Lakewood police announced that officers executed search warrants at both a residence and a vehicle on Thursday, leading to Chen’s arrest. Authorities charged him with several counts related to burglary and theft before transporting him to the Ocean County jail.
As of Tuesday morning, Chen was no longer listed in the jail system. Information regarding his release or court status was not immediately available.
Chen is represented by attorney Terrance L. Turnbach, who could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday morning.
Lakewood Police Chief Gregory Myers addressed the case in a public statement, saying the incidents caused concern throughout the local community because the alleged crimes targeted houses of worship. Myers also praised investigators and officers for their efforts in identifying the suspect and completing the investigation.
The case has drawn attention within the Lakewood community, where synagogues and religious centers play a major role in daily life. Authorities have not announced whether additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.
Police have not released further details about the amount of money allegedly stolen or the exact number of synagogues involved in the reported burglaries.
